...And This Too Shall Pass

Now, where were we....Dad being home, extreme fatigue, really wiped out from this second treatment cycle. His follow up appointment on Wednesday revealed that his red blood cells were low, so were his white blood cells.  His doctor was concerned that he was experiencing neutropenia and anemia. One type of white blood cells is called neutrophil. When that count is low, it is called neutropenia. Remember it is important to watch for signs of infection when this occurs. And of course anemia occurs when the red blood cells are low.  That is the reason for the 'wiped out' feeling.  His blood pressure was low and his pulse was high. My interpretation: if your blood is low, then your heart has to work harder to move that blood through your body.

Well, Dad's care team at Karmanos took that seriously.  Especially because of his heart history.  At first they were giving him a choice as to whether he wanted to and when he wanted to come in for a blood infusion (transfusion). But after they saw his total blood work results they strongly suggested that he come back this morning for blood.
Once here they took Dad's vitals to prepare for the infusion and found that his temperature was above the 100.5 degree mark where they tell you to call your doctor or nurse immediately.  The transfusion has been postponed.  We were admitted into Karmanos this morning. They are giving Dad antibiotics, some fluids (not many), and working very hard to ward off infection while we wait for the Neulasta shot to kick in and rebuild those white blood cells. Primary goal: reduce that high temperature.

And yes, I said we.  I drove back to Detroit this morning around 5:00 a.m.  I was glad to see them (Dad and Mom), and I believe they were glad to see me.  Dad has already ask, "how long are you staying?" I told him he'd do anything to get me back here to stay with him :-)

  1. Hello, Nannette. Lo, just wanted you to know that you've been in my prayers since I've heard about it...I pray to thank and praise God for the healing He has provided you, and I pray that you know in your heart (and will let your heart inform your intellect) that you are healed, already, by the love and grace of God, and only await the physical manifestation which is forthcoming. There's a law at work, and it's more reliable than the law of Gravity; it's the law of Faith that starts with a "knowing" that's in the heart...you can rest in that place that's in the heart, and it's a good, peaceful rest.

I've been tied up since late July and unable to read through my email, so I'll catch up on this blog over the weekend, but I recognize that "wiped out" state you're experiencing. Don't know if you're dong radiation, but if so, then the energy drain is all the more accentuated. What helped me through this was, believe it or not, fresh-squeezed, homemade lemonade (sweetened to your liking)...I'm sure it was the sugar that provided the energy boost, but it energized me more than anything else and it still retained its true taste; for everything else I ate or drank, the taste seemed altered, but this wasn't the case for fresh, real lemonade (oh, and the powdered kind you buy in the stores doesn't work - it's got to be the real thing).

Yeah, I know what you're saying about laughter, too. My grandson and I used to watch reruns of Fresh Prince all night; I got a kick out of just hearing him laugh. Get you some comedy DVDs you can watch with someone and enjoy the laughter. Better yet, email me your address and a list of your favorite comedy shows.

My prayers and love are with you -- Benny

  2. Hey Ben,

It was great to hear from you. Dad sends his love and thanks you for your encouragement. He remembers when you were going through. Said he didn't know the details but he is glad YOU are HEALED. I must add: When Dad hears from those of you who have survived cancer it is an extra boost. It increases his faith.
Thanks again Ben. We love you and are praying for you and yours. Bettie, Lo, and Nanette (Yolanda)
